Over the course of two days, thirty-six Laurentian University and Cambrian College students participated in the second annual Road to Riches Accounting Challenge. Road to Riches is a case competition which aims to test students’ knowledge of accounting, auditing and business issues, as well as their presentation and communication skills, through the analysis of a realistic business case.

In the first part of the event on January 20, nine teams of four students and one CA student mentor battled it out in hopes of making it to the finals. Then on February 3, teams arrived at the Howard Johnson Plaza on Brady Street, where the top four teams were announced and presented their analyses to the panel of judges.

The evening featured a speech from Laurentian University President Dominic Giroux, followed by the presentations, a fully catered dinner, and a chance to win door prizes.

At the conclusion of the evening, Kayla Levesque, CA spoke about her progress through the various components of the CA professional program (the CKE, SOA and UFE) before announcing the winning team.

Taking home the top prize of $500, the gold medals, and the title of “Masters of the Road to Riches” was “Everyday Normal Guys”, consisting of Laurentian University students Marc Boivin, Zach Drinkwalter, Keith Hutton, and Jesse Longlade. The team was mentored by Chris Piel from Freelandt Caldwell Reilly LLP.

The LAA wishes to thank the sponsors of the Road to Riches Accounting Challenge:

Laurentian University students Jessica Appelle (1st year), Amanda Goupil (2nd year) and Sarah Pabst (3rd year) travelled to Toronto last weekend to compete in the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario to compete in the annual CA$H competition against 42 other teams from 21 other university programs.

The competition, held on January 8, gives teams of university students considering a career as a Chartered Accountant the opportunity to engage in friendly competition, have fun and earn some cash prizes. Teams competed in a simulation designed by Eagles Flight to test the participants’ use of CA skills such as teamwork, leadership, organizational ability and time management. Following the event, participants had the opportunity to participate in a networking session with representatives from firms including KPMG, PwC, Deloitte, Ernst & Young, Bell, Manulife Financial and TELUS.

“The CA$H competition is a chance for students to learn about the skills they’ll need to succeed in the world of business, while competing for prizes that can help fund their education,” said Jon French, Associate Director, Career Information at the Institute. “The winners enjoy the cash they get from CA$H but, for the students didn’t win, we think this competition demonstrates the value of considering a CA career, a decision that would certainly make them a winner in the long run.”

The team from University of Toronto – Mississauga succeeded in defending their title. More details on the competition are on www.guidetorulingtheworld.ca and on the ICAO’s “Chartered Accountants Ruling The World” Facebook page.

Congratulations to Sarah, Amanda and Jessica for proudly representing Laurentian at the event!
