Over the course of two days, thirty-six Laurentian University and Cambrian College students participated in the second annual Road to Riches Accounting Challenge. Road to Riches is a case competition which aims to test students’ knowledge of accounting, auditing and business issues, as well as their presentation and communication skills, through the analysis of a realistic business case.
In the first part of the event on January 20, nine teams of four students and one CA student mentor battled it out in hopes of making it to the finals. Then on February 3, teams arrived at the Howard Johnson Plaza on Brady Street, where the top four teams were announced and presented their analyses to the panel of judges.
The evening featured a speech from Laurentian University President Dominic Giroux, followed by the presentations, a fully catered dinner, and a chance to win door prizes.
At the conclusion of the evening, Kayla Levesque, CA spoke about her progress through the various components of the CA professional program (the CKE, SOA and UFE) before announcing the winning team.
Taking home the top prize of $500, the gold medals, and the title of “Masters of the Road to Riches” was “Everyday Normal Guys”, consisting of Laurentian University students Marc Boivin, Zach Drinkwalter, Keith Hutton, and Jesse Longlade. The team was mentored by Chris Piel from Freelandt Caldwell Reilly LLP.
